Cultivating effective interpersonal skills

I consider my strength in interpersonal behavioral competencies to be in the area of Communication. I have consistently received positive feedback from peers and supervisors regarding my ability to convey complex ideas clearly and empathetically, both verbally and in writing. For example, during group projects at work, I have led team meetings and provided concise, structured updates that facilitate understanding and collaboration among team members. This strength is also reflected in my capacity to listen actively, which is a key component of effective communication (SHRM, n.d.). I have determined this to be a strength through performance reviews and self-assessment surveys that highlight my clarity in messaging and my ability to foster open dialogue, which has resulted in improved team outcomes and higher satisfaction ratings.

Conversely, my self-assessment has revealed that I have room for growth in cultivating a Global Mindset. Although I am aware of cultural differences and strive to be inclusive, I occasionally struggle to fully integrate diverse perspectives into my decision-making processes, especially when faced with unfamiliar international contexts. I recognize this as a weakness because feedback from international colleagues sometimes suggests that my approach, while well-intentioned, lacks the nuance required to navigate cross-cultural complexities. To develop this competency further, I plan to engage in targeted professional development such as cultural competency training and seek mentorship from colleagues with extensive global experience. Additionally, I will deliberately seek out international projects that challenge me to apply a more globally oriented perspective, thereby improving my ability to integrate diverse cultural viewpoints into my leadership practices (SHRM, n.d.).
