Compassionate caring, from a Christian spirituality and ethics perspective, involves offering empathy, love, and support to others, especially those suffering from physical, emotional, or spiritual distress. It is rooted in the teachings of Jesus Christ, who demonstrated unconditional love, healing, and concern for the marginalized and sick (Matthew 14:14). Compassion in this context extends beyond simply alleviating suffering to actively entering into another person’s experience and offering them comfort, dignity, and hope.

In health and healing, compassionate caring emphasizes the importance of the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. This holistic approach is foundational in Christian ethics, as it aligns with the belief that human beings are created in the image of God and deserving of respect and care. According to Nouwen (2001), true compassion involves “suffering with” others, not just responding with charity but entering into the emotional and spiritual journey of those we care for. This approach encourages healthcare professionals to not only treat diseases or symptoms but also to nurture the spiritual well-being of patients, helping them find peace, purpose, and connection with God.

Furthermore, compassionate caring requires patience, understanding, and forgiveness, both towards oneself and others. In healthcare, this translates to a commitment to maintaining the dignity of each patient, advocating for justice and equity in treatment, and providing care that is not driven by self-interest but by a deep sense of service and love for others (Haug, 2017).
