DNP Influence on Leadership Through IOM Nursing Reports

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree plays a vital role in shaping leadership within healthcare by implementing evidence-based guidelines and recommendations from the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Nursing Reports. The IOM reports, notably The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, emphasize the importance of advanced education and evidence-based practice for nurses, recommending that nurses achieve higher levels of education to improve patient outcomes and quality of care (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine [NASEM], 2016). As a DNP-prepared leader, I will leverage these principles to lead by example, promoting continued education and the integration of research into clinical practice, thereby driving quality improvements and advancing the nursing profession. The DNP degree provides the knowledge and skills needed to translate evidence into practice, which aligns closely with the IOM’s goals of improving healthcare through a stronger nursing workforce. In my leadership role, I will implement strategies from the IOM reports by fostering interprofessional collaboration, leading healthcare reform initiatives, and advocating for policy changes that expand nursing roles. The IOM reports stress that advanced practice nurses are integral to expanding access to care and improving health outcomes, particularly in underserved areas (NASEM, 2016). By incorporating these guidelines, I can support healthcare systems in implementing new care models that enhance accessibility, efficiency, and patient-centered care.
