Endangered languages, much like animal species, are integral to the cultural and intellectual diversity of humanity. The extinction of a language often leads to the loss of unique knowledge, traditions, and worldviews that are embedded in the language itself. In the film The Linguists, we witness how linguists work tirelessly to document and preserve endangered languages, highlighting the profound impact language loss has on the communities it serves. One of the key arguments for protecting endangered languages is that they embody unique ways of understanding the world, encompassing rich histories, philosophies, and ecological knowledge.
