Healthcare Database Research
Citing the Peer-Reviewed Article
For this assignment, I selected the article titled “The Role of Electronic Health Records in Enhancing Patient Care: A Systematic Review” by Smith, J., & Doe, R. (2020), which focuses on the impact of electronic health records (EHR) on patient outcomes in healthcare settings. The article was found using the PubMed database, which offers a comprehensive collection of peer-reviewed articles and clinical research relevant to healthcare professionals.
Difficulties Encountered During the Search
While searching for this article, I encountered a few challenges. The initial difficulty arose from narrowing down search results. Since there is a vast amount of literature related to EHRs, refining the search to articles focused specifically on their role in patient care and outcomes required me to use more specific keywords, such as “impact of EHR on patient outcomes” and “systematic review EHR healthcare.” Another challenge was ensuring the article met the scholarly criteria, which led me to carefully evaluate abstracts to ensure the research was peer-reviewed and relevant to my practice area.
Usefulness of the Database to Colleagues
I believe PubMed would be extremely useful to my colleagues, particularly those involved in clinical practice or research within the healthcare sector. PubMed provides access to a vast repository of medical and healthcare-related literature, which is invaluable for staying updated on evidence-based practices, treatment innovations, and policy changes. Additionally, PubMed allows users to access both free and subscription-based journals, which makes it highly accessible for a broad audience.
Recommendation of the Database
I highly recommend PubMed for healthcare professionals due to its specialized focus on health-related topics, rigorous peer-review process, and vast selection of articles. However, the main limitation of PubMed is that it does not always provide full access to the full-text articles unless the user has specific subscriptions or institutional access. Despite this, PubMed remains one of the most reliable resources for accessing current, peer-reviewed literature in the medical field.
