Observational Learning Strategies

Social learning is a theory based on the idea of learning through observation. However, it is not that simple, as people do not imitate all behavior they observe. Bandura (1986) proposed that some basic processes must be present to succeed (as cited in Gluck, Mercado, & Myers, 2020).

Create a scenario where you can use social learning theory to teach a new skill to either a child or an adult. Explain how you would attempt to teach this new skill, including what factors should be present to increase the likelihood of this approach being effective (see the processes that Bandura suggested are necessary!). Also, explain some challenges you might expect to encounter and why social learning may not always be an effective way to teach.

Scenario: Teaching a Child to Tie Shoelaces

To teach a child how to tie shoelaces using social learning theory, I would model the skill by demonstrating it clearly and slowly. I would say, “Watch how I cross the laces and make a loop.” Key processes from Bandura’s theory that should be present include:

  1. Attention: Ensure the child is focused and engaged. Observational Learning Strategies
  2. Retention: Encourage the child to visualize the steps or repeat them verbally.
  3. Reproduction: Allow the child to practice while I provide guidance.
  4. Motivation: Use positive reinforcement to encourage persistence.

Challenges

Some challenges may include the child’s frustration or lack of interest, which could hinder their attention and motivation. Additionally, if the child does not see the value in learning this skill, they may not engage in the practice, illustrating that social learning may not always be…
