Pediatric Acute Otitis Media
This week’s clinical experience in pediatric care was both challenging and rewarding. I encountered various pediatric cases, but one of the most educational experiences was assessing and managing a 5-year-old child diagnosed with Acute Otitis Media (AOM). This experience deepened my understanding of pediatric assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning, as well as the importance of patient and caregiver education.
Challenges and Successes Faced
Challenges:
- Parental Anxiety and Concerns: The child’s mother was extremely worried and hesitant about using antibiotics due to concerns about side effects and antibiotic resistance. Addressing her concerns while ensuring adherence to the treatment plan was a challenge.
- Child Cooperation During Examination: The patient was anxious and resisted the otoscopic exam, making it difficult to visualize the tympanic membrane. Using a gentle approach and distraction techniques helped facilitate the examination.
Successes:
- Effective Parent Education: After a thorough discussion on antibiotic stewardship, the natural course of AOM, and pain management, the caregiver felt reassured and agreed to the prescribed treatment plan.
